What to Know Before Your First Hair Appointment | Ventura Hairstylist

Every Great Appointment Starts Before You Walk Through the Door

One of my favorite parts of being a hairstylist is helping people feel confident. Whether you’re visiting me for grey coverage, a dimensional brunette, lived-in blonding, or simply a haircut, every appointment is an opportunity to create something that feels uniquely you.

Over the years, I’ve realized that some of the biggest factors in achieving beautiful, healthy hair happen before I even pick up a color brush. While every service is customized, there are a few things I wish every new client knew before sitting in my chair.

Think of these less as rules and more as insider tips from someone who genuinely wants you to have the best experience possible.

You Don’t Need to Come In With “Dirty Hair”

This is probably one of the biggest myths in the beauty industry.

Many people have been told that hair color works better on dirty hair, but that’s rarely the case.

For services like grey coverage, glosses, and all-over color, I actually prefer hair that’s relatively clean. Hair that’s been washed within the last day or two is perfectly fine.

What I don’t love seeing is hair that’s coated in layers of dry shampoo, root touch-up spray, texture spray, oils, or hairspray. Those products make it more difficult to accurately assess your natural color, texture, and scalp, and in some cases can interfere with the service itself.

If you’re coming in for blonding or highlights, your hair doesn’t need to be freshly shampooed that morning, but it also doesn’t need to be a week dirty. A little natural oil is perfectly normal; product buildup isn’t.

Inspiration Photos Are Incredibly Helpful

You don’t need to find the perfect Pinterest photo.

In fact, I’d rather see several photos than just one.

Tell me what you love about each image. Maybe it’s the brightness around the face, the softness of the blend, the richness of the brunette, or simply the overall feeling the color gives you.

Just as importantly, tell me what you don’t like. Those conversations help me create a look that’s inspired by your photos while still being customized for your hair, skin tone, and lifestyle.

Setting Realistic Expectations

One of the most important parts of every consultation is creating a plan together.

Inspiration photos are exactly that, inspiration.

Many of the images you see on Pinterest, Instagram, or even AI-generated platforms represent the end result of multiple appointments, hair extensions, professional styling, ideal lighting, or digital editing. What looks like a single appointment online may have actually taken months to achieve.

That doesn’t mean your goal isn’t possible.

In many cases, we can absolutely create a version of the look you love that’s tailored specifically to your hair, your lifestyle, and your maintenance preferences.

Some transformations happen in a single visit, while others are a journey. Going from years of dark color to a bright blonde, for example, may require multiple appointments, several hours in the salon, and a significant investment over time. While that can sometimes mean hundreds or even thousands of dollars throughout the process, taking a gradual approach almost always results in healthier hair and a more beautiful, longer-lasting result.

My goal isn’t to tell you what’s impossible.

My goal is to show you what’s possible for your hair while protecting its health every step of the way.

Tell Me Everything About Your Hair History

I promise I’m not here to judge.

If you’ve used box color, had a keratin treatment, tried henna, gone swimming every weekend, or bleached your hair years ago, I want to know.

Even services from several years ago can influence how your hair responds today.

The more information you share, the more accurately I can formulate your color, avoid unwanted surprises, and protect the integrity of your hair.

Beautiful Hair Takes Time

Luxury hair services aren’t rushed.

Whether we’re refreshing grey coverage or spending several hours creating seamless dimension, quality work requires patience.

I intentionally schedule enough time so we can consult thoroughly, formulate carefully, and finish your service without feeling rushed.

Beautiful hair is worth slowing down for.

Healthy Hair Will Always Come Before Chasing a Trend

Sometimes the healthiest decision isn’t the lightest blonde or the deepest brunette.

My goal isn’t simply to achieve your dream color today it’s to make sure your hair is healthy enough to enjoy that color for months and years to come.

There may be times when I recommend a more gradual approach or suggest strengthening the hair before making a dramatic change. That’s never because I don’t want to do it, it’s because I want to protect the integrity of your hair.

Beautiful Hair Doesn’t End at the Salon

One of the conversations I have most often with clients is about home maintenance. While I love creating beautiful hair in the salon, the truth is that what happens after you leave is even more important than the appointment itself.

I like to compare it to buying a new car.

You wouldn’t spend tens of thousands of dollars on a new vehicle and then skip the oil changes, ignore the warning lights, or fill it with the wrong fuel. You protect your investment because you want it to perform well and last for years.

Your hair is no different.

Every color service, haircut, or treatment is an investment in your confidence and your hair’s health. The products you use at home determine how well that investment holds up until your next appointment.

Professional color-safe shampoos and conditioners are designed to cleanse gently without stripping away your color. The right treatment can restore moisture, strengthen the hair, improve shine, and help prevent breakage before it starts. Heat protection, UV protection, and even how often you shampoo all play a role in maintaining healthy, vibrant hair.

I can only take care of your hair while you’re in my chair. The other 99% of the time, it’s in your hands.

When I recommend products, it’s never because I want to add something to your bill. It’s because I want you to love your hair every day, not just when you leave the salon. My recommendations are always based on your hair’s individual needs, your lifestyle, and your goals.

The appointment is where we create the foundation. Your home care routine is what preserves it.

Communication Makes Everything Better

One of the things I appreciate most is when clients communicate openly.

If something feels too warm, too cool, too dark, or simply different than you expected, tell me.

Hair appointments are collaborative. The more we communicate, the better your results become.

There are no silly questions, and I’d much rather spend a few extra minutes talking through your goals than have you leave unsure about something.

Every Appointment Is Customized

No two clients have the same hair.

Your lifestyle, maintenance routine, natural texture, previous color history, budget, and goals are all unique.

That’s why I don’t believe in cookie-cutter formulas or one-size-fits-all services.

Every appointment begins with a conversation because that’s how truly personalized hair is created.

More Than Beautiful Hair

At the end of the day, my job isn’t simply to color hair.

It’s to help people feel confident.

It’s to educate, collaborate, and create an experience where you feel heard from the moment you arrive until the moment you leave.

Whether it’s your very first appointment or you’ve been sitting in my chair for years, my goal remains the same: healthy hair, thoughtful color, honest communication, and results that feel just as good as they look.

I look forward to welcoming you into my chair.
